A detail from the Germain window in the North Transept.  At Auxerre in France, Benedict experience a vision six hundred years after Germain's death.  He was told to go to Selby and build an abbey.  Benedict finally arrived in Selby and recognised the place from his vision when three swans alighted on the river.
