Afternoon organ recital – Jan Liebermann

Jan Liebermann (*2005) received his first piano lessons at the age of 7 and began playing the organ with dean’s cantor Bernhard Zosel in Kronberg in 2018. In December 2019, he was accepted into the Young Academy of the HfMDK Frankfurt am Main as a young student in the organ class of Prof. Carsten Wiebusch.

Since the winter semester 2022/2023, he has been studying organ with Prof. Gerhard Gnann and organ improvisation with Lutz Brenner in the pre-college programme of the Mainz University of Music. He also takes piano lessons in the master class of the International Piano Institute Bad Homburg with Prof. Dr. Lev Natochenny.

Jan is 1st national prizewinner in the solo organ category at the competition “Jugend musiziert” 2021 with the highest score, 2nd prizewinner of the International Organ Competition Wuppertal 2023 and prizewinner of the first international organ competition in Deidesheim 2020, the “International Young Organist Competition Moscow” 2020 and the Concours International d’Orgue de Dudelange 2023. Jan is also a special prize winner of „Deutsche Stifung Musikleben“. He also received a scholarship from the Jürgen-Ponto-Stiftung Berlin in 2021.

Concert appearances have already taken him to the organs of many important churches, including Freiberg Cathedral, Essen Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral in London, Truro Cathedral, Stiftskirche in Stuttgart, St Michaelis in Hamburg, Freiburg Minster, St Jakobi in Lübeck and St Lamberti in Münster. He also played as part of the “Frankfurter Orgeltage” in the Heiliggeistkirche in Frankfurt am Main and at the “Hörprobe” concert series organised by radio station Deutschlandfunk Kultur. The concert was broadcast live on the radio.

In spring 2024, Jan performed all six of Johann Sebastian Bach’s trio sonatas from memory at several public concerts. The debut concert in Mainz was broadcast live on the internet and marked an unprecedented complete performance, especially for an artist of his age.

To expand his musical expressiveness, Jan received further inspiration from renowned organists such as Daniel Roth (Paris), Olivier Latry (Paris), Prof Tomasz Adam Nowak (Münster), Ben van Oosten (Rotterdam) and Léon Berben (Cologne).
