SUMMARY:Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols by Candlelight
DESCRIPTION:Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight\, Sunday 20 December\, 6.30pm\n\n\n\nFor many people\, this service marks the beginning of their Christmas – it is based around nine Bible readings telling of the fall of humanity\, the promise of the Messiah\, and the birth of Jesus. These readings are interspersed with carols sung by the Abbey Choir who also lead the congregation in singing traditional Christmas hymns.\n\n\n\n\nWe look forward to holding this service for the people of Selby and for those who travel from all over the region to attend. This and all Abbey services are free and booking is not required\, but as this service is usually very popular\, we advise arriving early.\n\n\n\n\nMusic at the service will include:\nOnce in royal David’s city\nThe voice of the Angel Gabriel (Philip Ledger)\nSilent night\nThe Angel Gabriel (Traditional arr. Pettman)\nO little town of Bethlehem\nSir Christèmas (William Mathias)\nWhile shepherds watched their flocks\nIn the bleak mid-winter (Harold Darke)\nThe first Nowell the angel did say\nA maiden most gentle (Andrew Carter)\nHere is the little door (Herbert Howells)\nO come all ye faithful\nHark the herald angels sing\n\n\n\nFollowing the service please join the Clergy and Choir for mulled wine and mince pies.\n\nDonations towards the ongoing work of Selby Abbey are greatly appreciated
