GRIMETHORPE COLLIERY BAND

Selby Abbey is delighted to welcome back the Grimethorpe Colliery Band for their second visit.  Please come along and enjoy a fantastic evening of Brass music held within the sacred walls of our Abbey church.

Formed in 1917, during the First World War, Grimethorpe Colliery Band is a British institution.  Renowned for musical excellence, the band’s record is formidable: 16 Brass in Concert Championship titles, 11 times Yorkshire Regional Champions, two English National Championship victories, four times British Open Champions and four times National Championship victories Brass Band of Great Britain.

Beyond the contest stage, Grimethorpe’s impact is truly global.  The band has performed at the FIFA World Cup, BBC Proms, BAFTA Awards, Eurovision, and the London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony, alongside countless international broadcasts and recordings.  It holds two gold discs and received a BAFTA nomination for it’s central role in the worldwide hit film Brassed Off.

Grimethorpe has appeared at many of the World’s most iconic venues, including the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican, Westminster Abbey, European Parliament and the Sydney Opera House, with tours spanning Europe, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

In 2024, the band joined Coldplay on the Glastonbury festival pyramid stage, performing to 125,000 live fans and a global TV audience of over 25 million.

Alongside its international profile, Grimethorpe remains deeply rooted in its community, championing youth music, education, and outreach across South Yorkshire and beyond.
