Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols by Candlelight

Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight, Sunday 21 December, 6.30pm
✨For many people, this service marks the beginning of their Christmas – it is based around nine Bible readings telling of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus. These readings are interspersed with carols sung by the Abbey Choir who also lead the congregation in singing traditional Christmas hymns.
✨We look forward to holding this service for the people of Selby and for those who travel from all over the region to attend. This and all Abbey services are free and booking is not required, but as this service is usually very popular, we advise arriving early.
✨Music at the service will include:
Once in royal David’s city
The voice of the Angel Gabriel (Philip Ledger)
Silent night
The Angel Gabriel (Traditional arr. Pettman)
O little town of Bethlehem
Sir Christèmas (William Mathias)
While shepherds watched their flocks
In the bleak mid-winter (Harold Darke)
The first Nowell the angel did say
A maiden most gentle (Andrew Carter)
Here is the little door (Herbert Howells)
O come all ye faithful
Hark the herald angels sing
Following the service please join the Clergy and Choir for mulled wine and mince pies.
Donations towards the ongoing work of Selby Abbey are greatly appreciated
